The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
Jesus’ parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector is shown through two sharply contrasted men at prayer. One stands upright with his hand raised, confident in his own righteousness. Beside him, the other bows with folded hands and lowered eyes, embodying the repentant plea, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” The temple setting and prayer shawls point to the worship context of Luke 18, where outward religion is weighed against true humility before God.
The scene teaches Christ’s warning against spiritual pride and His promise that the humble are justified. It is well suited for sermons, Bible lessons, discipleship resources, repentance themes, and teaching on grace, mercy, and sincere prayer.
