Proud Pharisee in Robes

A Pharisee or religious ruler stands in formal robes with a guarded, self-assured posture, his hands set at his waist and his gaze turned aside. The dignified clothing and commanding stance present a man accustomed to public honor, religious rank, and social respect. The figure evokes the Gospel warnings against spiritual pride, especially the contrast Jesus drew between outward righteousness and true humility before God. In the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, the Pharisee trusts in his own moral record while the repentant sinner receives mercy.
