The Flight into Egypt

Description
Mary cradles the infant Jesus while Joseph, staff in hand, rests beside a rocky wilderness path. The Holy Family is shown in motion and danger, leaving familiar ground under God’s command after Joseph receives the angelic warning to escape Herod’s violence. A distant shepherd and sheep deepen the pastoral setting, while the open desert horizon emphasizes exile, obedience, and divine protection.

The scene draws from Matthew 2:13-15, where God preserves the Messiah by sending Him into Egypt. The child who came as Israel’s Savior is carried as a vulnerable infant, yet the journey fulfills the redemptive pattern of Scripture: God calls His Son out of Egypt and guards His covenant promise even amid political threat. This artwork serves well for Christmas, Advent, Holy Family themes, refugee ministry, and teaching on God’s providential care.

Scriptures
Hosea 11:1   Matthew 2:13-15

Hosea 11

1 When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.

Matthew 2

13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
