Standing Stone of Remembrance

Product
Image ID

Description
A weathered upright stone rises from a wildflower meadow beside an old dry-stone wall, its rough surface marked by age, lichen, and the quiet endurance of the landscape. The solitary marker suggests the ancient practice of raising stones as witnesses, boundaries, and memorials before God. In Scripture, stones often become places of remembrance: Jacob sets up a pillar after encountering the Lord, Joshua commands memorial stones after Israel crosses the Jordan, and Samuel raises Ebenezer to confess, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

This image serves well for themes of remembrance, covenant, heritage, pilgrimage, spiritual milestones, and God’s faithfulness across generations. Its open field setting gives the stone a contemplative presence, suitable for sermons, devotionals, church history materials, retreat graphics, and teaching resources about biblical memorials and sacred markers.

Scriptures
1 Samuel 7:12   Genesis 28:18-22   Joshua 4:4-7

1 Samuel 7

12 Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer; for he said, “Till now the LORD has helped us.”

Genesis 28

18 So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. 19 He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first. 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, 21 so that I come again to my father's house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God, 22 and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”

Joshua 4

4 Then Joshua called the twelve men from the people of Israel, whom he had appointed, a man from each tribe. 5 And Joshua said to them, “Pass on before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take up each of you a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the people of Israel, 6 that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ 7 then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.”
