Roman Soldier of the Passion

A Roman soldier stands in close view wearing polished armor, a crested helmet, shoulder plates, and a red tunic beneath his military gear. In one hand he grips a long spear shaft, while a dark hammer rests near his arm, linking the figure to the brutal instruments and authority surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus. The desert-like hills behind him place the scene in the world of first-century Judea under Roman occupation. The soldier evokes the Passion narratives, where Roman troops mocked, scourged, crucified, and guarded Christ. He also calls to mind the centurion who, after witnessing Jesus die, confessed the righteousness and divine sonship of the Lord.
