Roman Soldier of the Passion

Product
Image ID
ebsps0180
Description
A Roman soldier stands in close view wearing polished armor, a crested helmet, shoulder plates, and a red tunic beneath his military gear. In one hand he grips a long spear shaft, while a dark hammer rests near his arm, linking the figure to the brutal instruments and authority surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus. The desert-like hills behind him place the scene in the world of first-century Judea under Roman occupation. The soldier evokes the Passion narratives, where Roman troops mocked, scourged, crucified, and guarded Christ. He also calls to mind the centurion who, after witnessing Jesus die, confessed the righteousness and divine sonship of the Lord. This artwork serves well for Holy Week, Good Friday, Passion teaching, Roman history in the New Testament, and sermons on the cross, repentance, and the unexpected testimony of a Gentile witness.

Scriptures
John 19:34   Luke 23:47   Mark 15:39   Matthew 27:27-31   Matthew 27:54

John 19

34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.

Luke 23

47 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!”

Mark 15

39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

Matthew 27

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor's headquarters, and they gathered the whole battalion before him. 28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.

Matthew 27

54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
