Jeroboam’s Golden Calf

Product
Image ID
rhpas3867
Description
Jeroboam’s golden calf stands raised before the people as hands reach upward in forbidden worship. Smoke rises from an altar in front of the idol, while radiant lines behind the calf intensify the false splendor of the scene. The composition portrays Israel’s tragic turn from covenant faithfulness to manufactured religion, when a king offered visible substitutes for the worship of the Lord. In 1 Kings 12, Jeroboam set up golden calves and told the people, “Here are your gods,” drawing the northern kingdom into sin. The image is suited for teaching on idolatry, compromised leadership, false worship, and the danger of replacing God’s revealed commands with convenient devotion.

Scriptures
1 Kings 12:28-30   1 Kings 13:33-34   2 Kings 10:29

1 Kings 12

28 So the king took counsel and made two calves of gold. And he said to the people, “You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” 29 And he set one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan. 30 Then this thing became a sin, for the people went as far as Dan to be before one.

1 Kings 13

33 After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests for the high places again from among all the people. Any who would, he ordained to be priests of the high places. 34 And this thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, so as to cut it off and to destroy it from the face of the earth.

2 Kings 10

29 But Jehu did not turn aside from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin—that is, the golden calves that were in Bethel and in Dan.
