Inscribed Stone Altar

Product
Image ID

Description
A weathered stone altar stands in stacked blocks, with an ancient inscription carved across the upper face like a witness preserved in rock. The rough surfaces, worn edges, and chiseled lettering evoke the world of biblical worship, where altars marked covenant encounters, sacrifice, thanksgiving, and obedience before God. In the Torah, Israel was commanded to build altars of stone and to let the written word stand as testimony, joining worship with remembrance and instruction. The carved text on the altar suggests a sacred message fixed in a permanent place, calling attention to the way Scripture connects sacrifice, covenant, and the spoken command of the Lord. This artwork is suited for teaching themes of Old Testament worship, covenant memorials, biblical archaeology, sacrifice, and the enduring witness of God’s word.

Scriptures
Deuteronomy 27:5-8   Exodus 20:24-25   Joshua 8:30-32

Deuteronomy 27

5 And there you shall build an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You shall wield no iron tool on them; 6 you shall build an altar to the LORD your God of uncut stones. And you shall offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God, 7 and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and shall eat there, and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God. 8 And you shall write on the stones all the words of this law very plainly.”

Exodus 20

24 An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you. 25 If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, for if you wield your tool on it you profane it.

Joshua 8

30 At that time Joshua built an altar to the LORD, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal, 31 just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the people of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, “an altar of uncut stones, upon which no man has wielded an iron tool.” And they offered on it burnt offerings to the LORD and sacrificed peace offerings. 32 And there, in the presence of the people of Israel, he wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written.
