Jezebel and the Dogs of Jezreel

Queen Jezebel stands against the stone walls of Jezreel, dressed in royal garments with a fur-trimmed mantle and head covering, while hungry dogs gather behind her in the street. The composition focuses on the grim fulfillment of prophetic judgment: the proud queen who promoted idolatry and opposed the prophets of the Lord now faces the word spoken against her house. In 2 Kings 9, Jehu comes to Jezreel, Jezebel is cast down, and the dogs consume her remains, leaving no honorable burial.
