Exiles Preparing to Return

Description

Jewish exiles gather beside a sunlit stone wall with travel sacks at their feet, one man lifting his hands in prayer while another secures coins and provisions for the journey ahead. The raised hands and packed bags point to a moment of thanksgiving and preparation after captivity, when the people of Judah were stirred to go back and rebuild the house of the Lord in Jerusalem.

The scene reflects the restoration hope recorded in Ezra: exile was not the final word, and God moved hearts toward return, worship, and covenant renewal. The gathered provisions echo the practical obedience of a people leaving displacement behind and stepping toward the promises of God.

Scriptures
Ezra 1:5-6   Ezra 2:1   Psalm 126:1-3

Ezra 1

5 Then rose up the heads of the fathers' houses of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and the Levites, everyone whose spirit God had stirred to go up to rebuild the house of the LORD that is in Jerusalem. 6 And all who were about them aided them with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, with beasts, and with costly wares, besides all that was freely offered.

Ezra 2

1 Now these were the people of the province who came up out of the captivity of those exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried captive to Babylonia. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town.

Psalm 126

1 When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. 2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” 3 The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad.
