Elisha Plowing the Field

Elisha works behind a team of yoked oxen, driving the plow through furrowed ground on a windswept hillside. The scene presents the prophet before his public ministry, still engaged in the ordinary labor of the field when the call of God interrupts his life. In 1 Kings 19, Elijah finds Elisha plowing and casts his mantle upon him, marking Elisha as his prophetic successor. The oxen, yoke, dust, and turned soil emphasize obedience, vocation, and the cost of discipleship: Elisha leaves his former work behind to follow the prophetic calling placed upon him.
