1 Chronicles 17

1 Now when David lived in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.”1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.”1 Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle. And they were gathered at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.1 Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place and strengthened himself against Israel.1 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea the son of Elah began to reign in Samaria over Israel, and he reigned nine years.1 Moreover, Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue David tonight.1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.1 “You shall not sacrifice to the Lord your God an ox or a sheep in which is a blemish, any defect whatever, for that is an abomination to the Lord your God.1 All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.1 The word of the Lord came to me:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless,1 An oracle concerning Damascus. Behold, Damascus will cease to be a city and will become a heap of ruins.1 “The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron; with a point of diamond it is engraved on the tablet of their heart, and on the horns of their altars,1 “My spirit is broken; my days are extinct; the graveyard is ready for me.1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,1 Then allotment was made to the people of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph. To Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, were allotted Gilead and Bashan, because he was a man of war.1 There was a man of the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Micah.1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,1 And he said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come!1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying,1 Better is a dry morsel with quiet than a house full of feasting with strife.1 Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit!1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters,2 And Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.”2 And the word of the Lord came to him:2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered, and encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in line of battle against the Philistines.2 He placed forces in all the fortified cities of Judah and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa his father had captured.2 And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, yet not as the kings of Israel who were before him.2 “I will come upon him while he is weary and discouraged and throw him into a panic, and all the people who are with him will flee. I will strike down only the king,2 And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,2 “If there is found among you, within any of your towns that the Lord your God is giving you, a man or woman who does what is evil in the sight of the Lord your God, in transgressing his covenant,2 Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord ?”2 “Son of man, propound a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel;2 “that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.”2 The cities of Aroer are deserted; they will be for flocks, which will lie down, and none will make them afraid.2 “while their children remember their altars and their Asherim, beside every green tree and on the high hills,2 “Surely there are mockers about me, and my eye dwells on their provocation.2 “since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.2 And allotments were made to the rest of the people of Manasseh by their clans, Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida. These were the male descendants of Manasseh the son of Joseph, by their clans.2 And he said to his mother, “The 1,100 pieces of silver that were taken from you, about which you uttered a curse, and also spoke it in my ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it.” And his mother said, “Blessed be my son by the Lord.”2 “Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the people of Israel and say to them, This is the thing that the Lord has commanded.2 “It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.2 “Speak to the people of Israel, and get from them staffs, one for each fathers’ house, from all their chiefs according to their fathers’ houses, twelve staffs. Write each man’s name on his staff,2 A servant who deals wisely will rule over a son who acts shamefully and will share the inheritance as one of the brothers.2 From your presence let my vindication come! Let your eyes behold the right!2 “with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk.”3 But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan,3 “Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan.3 And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with a valley between them.3 The Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David. He did not seek the Baals,3 Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria. And Hoshea became his vassal and paid him tribute.3 “and I will bring all the people back to you as a bride comes home to her husband. You seek the life of only one man, and all the people will be at peace.”3 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.”3 “and has gone and served other gods and worshiped them, or the sun or the moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have forbidden,3 But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”3 “say, Thus says the Lord God : A great eagle with great wings and long pinions, rich in plumage of many colors, came to Lebanon and took the top of the cedar.3 Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him,3 The fortress will disappear from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus; and the remnant of Syria will be like the glory of the children of Israel, declares the Lord of hosts.3 “on the mountains in the open country. Your wealth and all your treasures I will give for spoil as the price of your high places for sin throughout all your territory.3 “Lay down a pledge for me with you; who is there who will put up security for me?3 “And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.3 Now Zelophehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters, and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.3 And he restored the 1,100 pieces of silver to his mother. And his mother said, “I dedicate the silver to the Lord from my hand for my son, to make a carved image and a metal image. Now therefore I will restore it to you.”3 “If any one of the house of Israel kills an ox or a lamb or a goat in the camp, or kills it outside the camp,3 “Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him,3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.3 “and write Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi. For there shall be one staff for the head of each fathers’ house.3 The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and the Lord tests hearts.3 You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.3 And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns.4 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord : It is not you who will build me a house to dwell in.4 “You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”4 And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.4 but sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments, and not according to the practices of Israel.4 But the king of Assyria found treachery in Hoshea, for he had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore the king of Assyria shut him up and bound him in prison.4 And the advice seemed right in the eyes of Absalom and all the elders of Israel.4 And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women.4 “and it is told you and you hear of it, then you shall inquire diligently, and if it is true and certain that such an abomination has been done in Israel,4 So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.”4 “He broke off the topmost of its young twigs and carried it to a land of trade and set it in a city of merchants.4 “Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.4 And in that day the glory of Jacob will be brought low, and the fat of his flesh will grow lean.4 “You shall loosen your hand from your heritage that I gave to you, and I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do not know, for in my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever.”4 “Since you have closed their hearts to understanding, therefore you will not let them triumph.4 “I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.4 They approached Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the leaders and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance along with our brothers.” So according to the mouth of the Lord he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.4 So when he restored the money to his mother, his mother took 200 pieces of silver and gave it to the silversmith, who made it into a carved image and a metal image. And it was in the house of Micah.4 “and does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it as a gift to the Lord in front of the tabernacle of the Lord, bloodguilt shall be imputed to that man. He has shed blood, and that man shall be cut off from among his people.4 “and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”4 “Then you shall deposit them in the tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you.4 An evildoer listens to wicked lips, and a liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.4 With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent.4 The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality.5 “‘For I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up Israel to this day, but I have gone from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling.5 So he went and did according to the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan.5 He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze.5 Therefore the Lord established the kingdom in his hand. And all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had great riches and honor.5 Then the king of Assyria invaded all the land and came to Samaria, and for three years he besieged it.5 Then Absalom said, “Call Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear what he has to say.”5 But the Jews were jealous, and taking some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd.5 “then you shall bring out to your gates that man or woman who has done this evil thing, and you shall stone that man or woman to death with stones.5 And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.5 “Then he took of the seed of the land and planted it in fertile soil. He placed it beside abundant waters. He set it like a willow twig,5 “No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.5 And it shall be as when the reaper gathers standing grain and his arm harvests the ears, and as when one gleans the ears of grain in the Valley of Rephaim.5 Thus says the Lord : “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord.5 “He who informs against his friends to get a share of their property— the eyes of his children will fail.5 “And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.5 Thus there fell to Manasseh ten portions, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is on the other side of the Jordan,5 And the man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod and household gods, and ordained one of his sons, who became his priest.5 “This is to the end that the people of Israel may bring their sacrifices that they sacrifice in the open field, that they may bring them to the Lord, to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and sacrifice them as sacrifices of peace offerings to the Lord.5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”5 “And the staff of the man whom I choose shall sprout. Thus I will make to cease from me the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against you.”5 Whoever mocks the poor insults his Maker; he who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished.5 My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped.5 And on her forehead was written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth’s abominations.”6 “‘In all places where I have moved with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’6 And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.6 And he had bronze armor on his legs, and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders.6 His heart was courageous in the ways of the Lord. And furthermore, he took the high places and the Asherim out of Judah.6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria, and he carried the Israelites away to Assyria and placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.6 And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him, “Thus has Ahithophel spoken; shall we do as he says? If not, you speak.”6 And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also,6 “On the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses the one who is to die shall be put to death; a person shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness.6 “Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.6 “and it sprouted and became a low spreading vine, and its branches turned toward him, and its roots remained where it stood. So it became a vine and produced branches and put out boughs.6 “I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you.6 Gleanings will be left in it, as when an olive tree is beaten— two or three berries in the top of the highest bough, four or five on the branches of a fruit tree, declares the Lord God of Israel.6 “He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land.6 “He has made me a byword of the peoples, and I am one before whom men spit.6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.6 because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance along with his sons. The land of Gilead was allotted to the rest of the people of Manasseh.6 In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.6 “And the priest shall throw the blood on the altar of the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting and burn the fat for a pleasing aroma to the Lord.6 And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.6 Moses spoke to the people of Israel. And all their chiefs gave him staffs, one for each chief, according to their fathers’ houses, twelve staffs. And the staff of Aaron was among their staffs.6 Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.6 I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words.6 And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. When I saw her, I marveled greatly.7 “Now, therefore, thus shall you say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel,7 And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron. And his shield-bearer went before him.7 In the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah;7 And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods7 Then Hushai said to Absalom, “This time the counsel that Ahithophel has given is not good.”7 “and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”7 “The hand of the witnesses shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.7 And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”7 “And there was another great eagle with great wings and much plumage, and behold, this vine bent its roots toward him and shot forth its branches toward him from the bed where it was planted, that he might water it.7 “And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.7 In that day man will look to his Maker, and his eyes will look on the Holy One of Israel.7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.7 “My eye has grown dim from vexation, and all my members are like a shadow.7 “Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.7 The territory of Manasseh reached from Asher to Michmethath, which is east of Shechem. Then the boundary goes along southward to the inhabitants of En-tappuah.7 Now there was a young man of Bethlehem in Judah, of the family of Judah, who was a Levite, and he sojourned there.7 “So they shall no more sacrifice their sacrifices to goat demons, after whom they whore. This shall be a statute forever for them throughout their generations.7 “Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’?7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.”7 And Moses deposited the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the testimony.7 Fine speech is not becoming to a fool; still less is false speech to a prince.7 Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.7 But the angel said to me, “Why do you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman, and of the beast with seven heads and ten horns that carries her.8 “‘and I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a name, like the name of the great ones of the earth.8 Then the word of the Lord came to him,8 He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.8 and with them the Levites, Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah; and with these Levites, the priests Elishama and Jehoram.8 and walked in the customs of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel, and in the customs that the kings of Israel had practiced.8 Hushai said, “You know that your father and his men are mighty men, and that they are enraged, like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Besides, your father is expert in war; he will not spend the night with the people.8 And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard these things.8 “If any case arises requiring decision between one kind of homicide and another, one kind of legal right and another, or one kind of assault and another, any case within your towns that is too difficult for you, then you shall arise and go up to the place that the Lord your God will choose.8 Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.8 “It had been planted on good soil by abundant waters, that it might produce branches and bear fruit and become a noble vine.8 “And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.”8 He will not look to the altars, the work of his hands, and he will not look on what his own fingers have made, either the Asherim or the altars of incense.8 “He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”8 “The upright are appalled at this, and the innocent stirs himself up against the godless.8 “For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.8 The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh, but the town of Tappuah on the boundary of Manasseh belonged to the people of Ephraim.8 And the man departed from the town of Bethlehem in Judah to sojourn where he could find a place. And as he journeyed, he came to the hill country of Ephraim to the house of Micah.8 “And you shall say to them, Any one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn among them, who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice8 “Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’?8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.8 On the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony, and behold, the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds.8 A bribe is like a magic stone in the eyes of the one who gives it; wherever he turns he prospers.8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,8 “The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to rise from the bottomless pit and go to destruction. And the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel to see the beast, because it was and is not and is to come.9 “‘And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall waste them no more, as formerly,9 “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.”9 “If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.”9 And they taught in Judah, having the Book of the Law of the Lord with them. They went about through all the cities of Judah and taught among the people.9 And the people of Israel did secretly against the Lord their God things that were not right. They built for themselves high places in all their towns, from watchtower to fortified city.9 “Behold, even now he has hidden himself in one of the pits or in some other place. And as soon as some of the people fall at the first attack, whoever hears it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.’9 And when they had taken money as security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.9 “And you shall come to the Levitical priests and to the judge who is in office in those days, and you shall consult them, and they shall declare to you the decision.9 So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”9 “Say, Thus says the Lord God : Will it thrive? Will he not pull up its roots and cut off its fruit, so that it withers, so that all its fresh sprouting leaves wither? It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it from its roots.9 And God said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations.9 In that day their strong cities will be like the deserted places of the wooded heights and the hilltops, which they deserted because of the children of Israel, and there will be desolation.9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?9 “Yet the righteous holds to his way, and he who has clean hands grows stronger and stronger.9 “I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.9 Then the boundary went down to the brook Kanah. These cities, to the south of the brook, among the cities of Manasseh, belong to Ephraim. Then the boundary of Manasseh goes on the north side of the brook and ends at the sea,9 And Micah said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him, “I am a Levite of Bethlehem in Judah, and I am going to sojourn where I may find a place.”9 “and does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it to the Lord, that man shall be cut off from his people.9 “Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded?9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”9 Then Moses brought out all the staffs from before the Lord to all the people of Israel. And they looked, and each man took his staff.9 Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.9 from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me.9 “This calls for a mind with wisdom: the seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated;10 “‘from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the Lord will build you a house.10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.”10 And the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together.”10 And the fear of the Lord fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, and they made no war against Jehoshaphat.10 They set up for themselves pillars and Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree,10 “Then even the valiant man, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will utterly melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and that those who are with him are valiant men.10 The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue.10 “Then you shall do according to what they declare to you from that place that the Lord will choose. And you shall be careful to do according to all that they direct you.10 So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.10 “Behold, it is planted; will it thrive? Will it not utterly wither when the east wind strikes it—wither away on the bed where it sprouted?”10 “This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised.10 For you have forgotten the God of your salvation and have not remembered the Rock of your refuge; therefore, though you plant pleasant plants and sow the vine-branch of a stranger,10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”10 “But you, come on again, all of you, and I shall not find a wise man among you.10 “All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.10 the land to the south being Ephraim’s and that to the north being Manasseh’s, with the sea forming its boundary. On the north Asher is reached, and on the east Issachar.10 And Micah said to him, “Stay with me, and be to me a father and a priest, and I will give you ten pieces of silver a year and a suit of clothes and your living.” And the Levite went in.10 “If any one of the house of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn among them eats any blood, I will set my face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people.10 “So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’”10 And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”10 And the Lord said to Moses, “Put back the staff of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept as a sign for the rebels, that you may make an end of their grumblings against me, lest they die.”10 A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred blows into a fool.10 They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths they speak arrogantly.10 “they are also seven kings, five of whom have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come, and when he does come he must remain only a little while.11 “‘When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.11 And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.11 Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and silver for tribute, and the Arabians also brought him 7,700 rams and 7,700 goats.11 and there they made offerings on all the high places, as the nations did whom the Lord carried away before them. And they did wicked things, provoking the Lord to anger,11 “But my counsel is that all Israel be gathered to you, from Dan to Beersheba, as the sand by the sea for multitude, and that you go to battle in person.11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.11 “According to the instructions that they give you, and according to the decision which they pronounce to you, you shall do. You shall not turn aside from the verdict that they declare to you, either to the right hand or to the left.11 Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.11 Then the word of the Lord came to me:11 “You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.11 though you make them grow on the day that you plant them, and make them blossom in the morning that you sow, yet the harvest will flee away in a day of grief and incurable pain.11 Like the partridge that gathers a brood that she did not hatch, so is he who gets riches but not by justice; in the midst of his days they will leave him, and at his end he will be a fool.11 “My days are past; my plans are broken off, the desires of my heart.11 “And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.11 Also in Issachar and in Asher Manasseh had Beth-shean and its villages, and Ibleam and its villages, and the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, and the inhabitants of En-dor and its villages, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its villages, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; the third is Naphath.11 And the Levite was content to dwell with the man, and the young man became to him like one of his sons.11 “For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.11 On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee.11 He answered, “Elijah does come, and he will restore all things.11 Thus did Moses; as the Lord commanded him, so he did.11 An evil man seeks only rebellion, and a cruel messenger will be sent against him.11 They have now surrounded our steps; they set their eyes to cast us to the ground.11 “As for the beast that was and is not, it is an eighth but it belongs to the seven, and it goes to destruction.
