The Leper Sent Outside the Camp

Description
An afflicted man covers his mouth and withdraws from the tents of Israel while a robed priest directs him away from the gathered community. His exposed leg and bowed posture identify the visible burden of leprosy, and the desert camp setting places the moment within the ceremonial laws given to ancient Israel. The scene reflects the command in Leviticus that the leprous person live outside the camp and cry “unclean,” not as a denial of human worth, but as a solemn sign of ritual separation and the need for cleansing before God. This engraving-style biblical subject is well suited for teaching on holiness, impurity, quarantine, compassion for the afflicted, and the deeper scriptural longing for restoration. It can support sermons, Bible studies, church education, and ministry resources exploring the Law of Moses and the mercy later revealed in Christ’s cleansing of lepers.

Scriptures
Leviticus 13:45-46   Numbers 5:2-4

Leviticus 13

45 “The leprous person who has the disease shall wear torn clothes and let the hair of his head hang loose, and he shall cover his upper lip and cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean.’ 46 He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease. He is unclean. He shall live alone. His dwelling shall be outside the camp.

Numbers 5

2 “Command the people of Israel that they put out of the camp everyone who is leprous or has a discharge and everyone who is unclean through contact with the dead. 3 You shall put out both male and female, putting them outside the camp, that they may not defile their camp, in the midst of which I dwell.” 4 And the people of Israel did so, and put them outside the camp; as the LORD said to Moses, so the people of Israel did.
