The Condemned Thief on the Cross

Product
Image ID
wjpas0547
Description
A condemned criminal is fastened to a wooden cross, his arms stretched across the beam and bound with heavy rope near iron fittings. The exposed body, rough loincloth, and rigid posture emphasize the public brutality of Roman crucifixion. This figure represents one of the thieves crucified at Calvary beside Jesus Christ, a detail central to the Passion narrative in Luke 23. In the Gospel account, two criminals are executed with Jesus; one mocks Him, while the other confesses guilt, recognizes Christ’s innocence, and asks to be remembered in His kingdom. The scene speaks to judgment, suffering, repentance, and the astonishing mercy offered even at the hour of death. It is suited for Good Friday, Easter teaching, Passion Week resources, sermons on grace, and studies of the crucifixion.

Luke 23

32 Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

Luke 23

39 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Mark 15

27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.

Matthew 27

38 Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.
