Sarah Rides Toward Canaan

Description
Sarah, wife of Abraham, rides high on a camel beneath an open desert sky, lifting her hand to shade her eyes as she looks ahead on the long road of faith. Her travel garments and the camel’s bridle place the scene within the patriarchal world of Genesis, where Sarai journeyed with Abram from Haran toward the land God promised to show him. The image emphasizes movement, pilgrimage, and watchful expectation: Sarah is not shown at rest, but as a woman carried into the unknown by the covenant calling placed upon her household. Her story also carries the weight of barrenness and delayed promise, making this artwork useful for teaching about faith, waiting, covenant, and God’s faithfulness in impossible circumstances.

Genesis 11

30 Now Sarai was barren; she had no child.

Genesis 12

4 So Abram went, as the LORD had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan,

Genesis 17

15 And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16 I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”

Genesis 18

10 The LORD said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” 13 The LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”
