Roman Soldier at Calvary

Product
Image ID

Description
A Roman soldier stands watch beside three rough wooden crosses on a barren hill, evoking the place called The Skull, where Jesus was crucified between two criminals. The empty crosses rise over the rocky wilderness as silent witnesses to the Passion, Roman authority, and the costly obedience of Christ. The central cross draws the eye toward the Gospel meaning of Calvary: judgment, sacrifice, and redemption meeting in the death of Jesus. This image serves well for Good Friday, Holy Week, Easter teaching, sermons on the crucifixion, and ministry materials reflecting on Luke’s account of Jesus being crucified with one criminal on His right and one on His left.

Scriptures
John 19:17-18   Luke 23:33   Mark 15:22-27   Matthew 27:33-38

John 19

17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.

Luke 23

33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

Mark 15

22 And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And it was the third hour when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.

Matthew 27

33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34 they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots. 36 Then they sat down and kept watch over him there. 37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” 38 Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.
