Render to Caesar

Description
Jesus holds up a small coin before a tense group of religious leaders, answering the trap set by the Pharisees and Herodians concerning payment of tribute to Caesar. The raised denarius becomes the center of the lesson: the coin bears Caesar’s image, but human life bears the image of God. With calm authority, Christ exposes their hypocrisy and teaches a kingdom principle that honors civil responsibility without surrendering worship, conscience, or ultimate allegiance to earthly power. This artwork is well suited for teaching on stewardship, discipleship, Christian citizenship, integrity, and the words of Jesus, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

Scriptures
Luke 20:21-25   Mark 12:14-17   Matthew 22:17-21

Luke 20

21 So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God. 22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?” 23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar's.” 25 He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.”

Mark 12

14 And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone's opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” 15 But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” 16 And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar's.” 17 Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” And they marveled at him.

Matthew 22

17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.”
