Shortly after a visit to Israel, I attended a communion service in a large mission home in Holland. On the wall hung a wreath made from a branch of a crown of thorns bush, which grows in Israel. The symbolism took on a new power. The bread and wine, with which we are so familiar, took on a new sense of cost. Jesus words as He gave thanks, shared out the bread and the wine and told them to “Do this in remembrance of Me”, must have been bewildering to the disciples as they sat with Him. Understanding came later. For us too, understanding is a progressive thing.

Do this in remembrance of me.”20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. Luke 24 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. Mark 14 22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.”23 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.24 And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Matthew 26 26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you,28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
