Mary Weeps at the Crucifixion

Product
Image ID

Description
Mary is shown in anguished close-up at Calvary, her hood drawn around her face as tears fall while Jesus hangs on the cross in the distance between the condemned thieves. A Roman soldier stands near the execution ground, placing the grief of the mother of Jesus against the harsh reality of the Passion. The shallow focus draws the viewer first into Mary’s sorrow, then outward to the hill of crucifixion where redemption is being accomplished through suffering.

The scene reflects the Gospel witness of those who remained near the cross as Jesus gave His life. In John 19, Mary stands beside the beloved disciple while Christ entrusts them to one another, revealing tender care even in the hour of atonement. This artwork serves Holy Week, Good Friday, Easter, sermon visuals, devotional teaching, and ministry resources centered on sacrifice, lament, and the love of Christ displayed at the cross.

Scriptures
John 19:25-27   Luke 23:33-43   Mark 15:24-32   Matthew 27:35-38

John 19

25 but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

Luke 23

33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. 35 And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” 36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine 37 and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.” 39 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Mark 15

24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And it was the third hour when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

Matthew 27

35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots. 36 Then they sat down and kept watch over him there. 37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” 38 Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.
