2 Samuel 121 And the LORD sent Nathan to David. He came to him and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor.2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds,3 but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms, and it was like a daughter to him.4 Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”5 Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the LORD lives, the man who has done this deserves to die,6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.”7 Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.8 And I gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if this were too little, I would add to you as much more.9 Why have you despised the word of the LORD, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’11 Thus says the LORD, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house. And I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.12 For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.’”13 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” And Nathan said to David, “The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die.14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the LORD, the child who is born to you shall die.”15 Then Nathan went to his house. And the LORD afflicted the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and he became sick.16 David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground.17 And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them.18 On the seventh day the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us. How then can we say to him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm.”19 But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David understood that the child was dead. And David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.”20 Then David arose from the earth and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes. And he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. He then went to his own house. And when he asked, they set food before him, and he ate.21 Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.”22 He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows whether the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’23 But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”24 Then David comforted his wife, Bathsheba, and went in to her and lay with her, and she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. And the LORD loved him25 and sent a message by Nathan the prophet. So he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD.26 Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and took the royal city.27 And Joab sent messengers to David and said, “I have fought against Rabbah; moreover, I have taken the city of waters.28 Now then gather the rest of the people together and encamp against the city and take it, lest I take the city and it be called by my name.”29 So David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah and fought against it and took it.30 And he took the crown of their king from his head. The weight of it was a talent of gold, and in it was a precious stone, and it was placed on David's head. And he brought out the spoil of the city, a very great amount.31 And he brought out the people who were in it and set them to labor with saws and iron picks and iron axes and made them toil at the brick kilns. And thus he did to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem. 2 Samuel 221 And David spoke to the LORD the words of this song on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.2 He said, “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,3 my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.4 I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.5 “For the waves of death encompassed me, the torrents of destruction assailed me;6 the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me.7 “In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I called. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry came to his ears.8 “Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations of the heavens trembled and quaked, because he was angry.9 Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him.10 He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet.11 He rode on a cherub and flew; he was seen on the wings of the wind.12 He made darkness around him his canopy, thick clouds, a gathering of water.13 Out of the brightness before him coals of fire flamed forth.14 The LORD thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice.15 And he sent out arrows and scattered them; lightning, and routed them.16 Then the channels of the sea were seen; the foundations of the world were laid bare, at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.17 “He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters.18 He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.19 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support.20 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.21 “The LORD dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me.22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God.23 For all his rules were before me, and from his statutes I did not turn aside.24 I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from guilt.25 And the LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight.26 “With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;27 with the purified you deal purely, and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.28 You save a humble people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down.29 For you are my lamp, O LORD, and my God lightens my darkness.30 For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall.31 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.32 “For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?33 This God is my strong refuge and has made my way blameless.34 He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights.35 He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.36 You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your gentleness made me great.37 You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip;38 I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, and did not turn back until they were consumed.39 I consumed them; I thrust them through, so that they did not rise; they fell under my feet.40 For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me.41 You made my enemies turn their backs to me, those who hated me, and I destroyed them.42 They looked, but there was none to save; they cried to the LORD, but he did not answer them.43 I beat them fine as the dust of the earth; I crushed them and stamped them down like the mire of the streets.44 “You delivered me from strife with my people; you kept me as the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me.45 Foreigners came cringing to me; as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me.46 Foreigners lost heart and came trembling out of their fortresses.47 “The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation,48 the God who gave me vengeance and brought down peoples under me,49 who brought me out from my enemies; you exalted me above those who rose against me; you delivered me from men of violence.50 “For this I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations, and sing praises to your name.51 Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever.” 2 Samuel 71 Now when the king lived in his house and the LORD had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies,2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.”3 And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.”4 But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan,5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Would you build me a house to dwell in?6 I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling.7 In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’8 Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel.9 And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth.10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly,11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house.12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,15 but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’”17 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.18 Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?19 And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord GOD. You have spoken also of your servant's house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord GOD!20 And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord GOD!21 Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it.22 Therefore you are great, O LORD God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.23 And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name and doing for them great and awesome things by driving out before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods?24 And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O LORD, became their God.25 And now, O LORD God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken.26 And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you.27 For you, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you.28 And now, O Lord GOD, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.29 Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord GOD, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.” | |
