John the Baptist in the Wilderness

Description
John the Baptist stands among sun-baked wilderness cliffs, his rough garment bound at the waist as he raises both hands and cries out with prophetic urgency. The barren desert setting points to the ministry foretold by Isaiah and fulfilled in the Gospels: “the voice of one crying in the wilderness,” calling Israel to repentance and preparing the way for the Lord. His open mouth and lifted hands emphasize proclamation rather than private prayer, presenting John as the forerunner who announced the nearness of God’s kingdom before the public ministry of Jesus. This artwork is well suited for teaching on repentance, Advent preparation, baptism, prophetic witness, and the opening chapters of the Gospel narratives.
