Jesus Between the Two Thieves
Jesus hangs on the central cross at Golgotha, crowned with thorns and wounded beneath the open sky, with the two condemned thieves crucified on either side. A Roman soldier stands nearby with spear and armor, emphasizing the public execution under Roman authority and the stark loneliness of the Passion.
The scene draws from the Gospel account of the crucifixion, especially the exchange between the two criminals in Luke 23:39-43. One thief mocks Christ, while the other confesses guilt and recognizes Jesus’ innocence, receiving the promise of paradise. The three crosses proclaim both judgment and mercy: human sin is exposed at Calvary, while saving grace is offered through the suffering Messiah.
