The Death of Samuel

Samuel, the aged prophet and judge of Israel, lies upon his burial couch while the people gather around him in lamentation. Men and women lift their hands, cover their faces, and bend in grief; armed figures stand nearby, placing the passing of the prophet within the troubled days of Israel’s early monarchy. The vessels at the bedside and the gathered mourners give the scene the solemn character of a household and national funeral.

The subject reflects 1 Samuel 25:1, where all Israel assembled to mourn Samuel and bury him at his home in Ramah. Samuel’s death marks the close of a prophetic era: he had called Israel to repentance, anointed Saul, and later anointed David according to the Lord’s command.
