Conflict – the Birth of Ishmael

Abraham bends close to the newborn Ishmael as Hagar, dressed with Egyptian adornment, cradles her son beneath the shade of the household tent. Behind them, Sarah stands apart with folded arms, her presence revealing the tension that entered Abraham’s family after Hagar conceived. The composition centers on the child whose birth fulfilled human urgency rather than the promised line that would later come through Isaac.

The scene draws from Genesis 16, where Sarai gives her Egyptian servant Hagar to Abram in an attempt to obtain an heir. Ishmael’s birth shows both God’s mercy toward Hagar and the sorrow that follows when covenant promise is pursued by human striving.
