Crowned with Thorns at Calvary

Description
Jesus Christ hangs upon the cross beneath the weight of the crown of thorns, His eyes closed and His body marked by wounds and blood. The rough wood of the cross and the barren ground beneath Him place the viewer at Calvary, the place called The Skull, where the Son of God was crucified. The thorns pressed into His brow recall the soldiers’ mockery of His kingship, yet in Christian faith they also reveal the paradox of the Gospel: the true King reigns through sacrificial love. This close view of the Passion centers on Christ’s suffering, atonement, and obedience unto death, making it suitable for Good Friday, Holy Week, sermons on redemption, communion reflections, and teaching on the crucifixion.

Isaiah 53

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.

John 19

17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.

John 19

2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. 3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands.

Luke 23

33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

Mark 15

17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.

Matthew 27

29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.
