Conscience at the Crossroads

Conscience, personified as a robed angelic guide, places a steady hand on a well-dressed man burdened with the claims of public life. Papers marked Politics and Ledger, a satchel labeled Finance, and flowers tagged Society surround him as he stands beside a pale cross-shaped road marker in the grass. The composition presents a Christian moral allegory: worldly influence, reputation, money, and civic ambition press upon the soul, while conscience calls the man back to the way of righteousness.
