Cain’s Anger Toward Abel

Product
Image ID

Description
Cain grips his staff with a hardened face in the foreground while Abel, the shepherd, walks along the rocky hillside carrying lambs upon his shoulders. The contrast between the brothers points to the early Genesis account in which Abel’s offering from the flock was received, while Cain’s offering from the ground was not regarded in the same way. Cain’s visible anger reveals the sin crouching at the door of his heart, the moment before jealousy turns toward violence.

This biblical artwork is suited for teaching on Genesis 4, sibling rivalry, worship, obedience, repentance, and the danger of unchecked resentment. Abel’s lambs also underscore the sacrificial pattern that runs through Scripture, where acceptable worship is tied to faith and a surrendered heart before God.

Scriptures
1 John 3:12   Genesis 4:3-8   Hebrews 11:4   Luke 15:4

1 John 3

12 We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous.

Genesis 4

3 In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. 6 The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” 8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.

Hebrews 11

4 By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.

Luke 15

4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?
