Baskets of Firstfruits

Description
Woven harvest baskets overflow with figs, fig leaves, and branches, presenting the produce as a gathered offering rather than an ordinary still life. The filled baskets call to mind the firstfruits brought before the Lord in Israel’s worship, when the earliest yield of the land was placed in a basket and given through the priest as an act of gratitude and covenant remembrance. In the biblical pattern, the first portion of the harvest confessed that the land, the increase, and the future provision all belonged to God. The fig branches also evoke the fruitfulness of the promised land and the blessing of obedient stewardship. This artwork serves well for themes of harvest, thanksgiving, tithes and offerings, stewardship teaching, firstfruits sermons, and Old Testament worship resources.

Deuteronomy 26

2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall go to the place that the LORD your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there. 3 And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, ‘I declare today to the LORD your God that I have come into the land that the LORD swore to our fathers to give us.’ 4 Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down before the altar of the LORD your God.

Leviticus 23

10 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest, 11 and he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, so that you may be accepted. On the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it.

Numbers 18

12 All the best of the oil and all the best of the wine and of the grain, the firstfruits of what they give to the LORD, I give to you. 13 The first ripe fruits of all that is in their land, which they bring to the LORD, shall be yours. Everyone who is clean in your house may eat it.

Proverbs 3

9 Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce;
